Luckie Douglas Cartwright
Luckie Douglas Cartwright was born on September 25, 1947 to William Henry Cartwright and Francis Elizabeth Perry Cartwright. His childhood years were spent in the rural areas of Perquimans County where he learned hunting, fishing, and farming in the community of Woodville, NC. Luckie attended Perquimans County High School in Hertford, NC. In December of 1967 he decided to enlist in the Army and he spent a good portion of 1968 learning to be a VEHICLE REPAIRMAN. Upon graduation he completed Army schools on CODE OF CONDUCT, MILITARY JUSTICE, the GENEVA CONVENTION, and was shipped out for the first of 2 tours in Vietnam. Luckie earned the ARMY GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL, VIETNAM CAMPAIGN MEDAL, VIETNAM SERVICE MEDAL, NATIONAL DEFENSE MEDAL, and the ARMY COMMENDATION MEDAL. With 2 years and 9 months of a 3 year enlistment complete, he was given a 3 month early release to resume seasonal employment [farming] in his native North Carolina. He was being treated by the Veterans Administration for various diseases related to Agent Orange exposure and Luckie was 69 when he died in the Albemarle Medical Center in Elizabeth City, NC, on October 13, 2016. He was survived by a son, two stepsons, and two grandchildren. Luckie was preceded in death by a sister, Jo Ann Cartwright. North Carolina and Virginia PGR escorted the cremains to the A. G. Horton Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, VA, on June 28, 2017.
