Biography

Sergeant James R. Wells enlisted into the US Army on May 2nd, 1967, where he soon went to serve on the front lines during the Vietnam War. Throughout his service, he frequently wrote letters to his future wife Nancy. In those letters, he described his day to day life, hardships, including contracting Malaria, and excitement to return home to her and his family. Jimmy was one of only two of his unit of 500 men to return home from Vietnam. When he arrived at the airport after serving just under a year his girlfriend (soon to be wife) Nancy recalls picking him up at the airport and has described the sad sight of many soldiers returning without loved ones waiting. In recognition of his brave service, Jimmy earned a number of medals and commendations, including 2 bronze stars with valor and several presidential unit citations, along with his highest rank being a sergeant. He received an honorable discharge on May1, 1969. He and Nancy went on to get married on June 14th, 1969. They lived a happy life together in Mattituck, New York for the remainder of his life. Jimmy sadly passed away on September 5th, 2017 due to health complications caused by his exposure to Agent Orange. Jimmy was loving, caring, and kind. He is loved and remembered today as someone who constantly had a smile on his face and as someone who always cared and looked out for his family and friends.
