Biography

Lt. Col. Leonard J. Shields Sr, devoted husband, father, the greatest man we have ever known was born 28 Oct 42. He grew up a poor hard-working Iowa farm boy and later a United States Soldier which is what gave our dad the work ethic, integrity and drive that he instilled in all of us. With these core values, he taught us life was never easy, no one was going to hand anything over to us, that only with an honest day’s work could we go anywhere in life. He set the perfect example by working unselfishly providing for his family. He taught patriotism, duty, honor, courage by example. After graduating high school in 1961 dad became, Pvt. Leonard Shields. He always said, “I joined the Army to leave Iowa and see the world, so I spent the next three years at Ft. Riley Kansas”. Dad would eventually see the world. Europe, where he tried without success to drink Germany dry. The Korean Peninsula, learning that Kimchee is definitely and acquired taste, and of course all of South East Asia, particularly Vietnam where he, “enjoyed”, local customs like the 1968 Tet holiday. In all seriousness, Leonard Shields was a true Patriot! He believed in this great nation and all the it stands for. He started life as poor as anyone could but, he grabbed life and the American dream riding them as far as he could. From Private to Lt. Colonel and 34 years of service, going to war for the nation and beliefs he loved so much, Leonard J. Shields Sr., Lt. Col., (RET) was the greatest man we have ever known.
