Biography

Donald Michael Nemeth was born March 30, 1949 in Newark, New Jersey. As a young boy, he and his mother, Marcella, moved to Dunmore, Pennsylvania, where he called home. While attending Dunmore High School, Donald was quite the athlete participating in track&field, a shotputter, and varsity football player. He also won the Junior Olympics for Weight Lifting, where he earned the nickname "Zeus". After graduating from Dunmore High School in 1967, he enlisted in the Army. Don, as his friends called him, did two tours in Vietnam as a Infantryman, then a Platoon Sergeant. He received many ribbons and medals including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. After returning from his final tour duty in Vietnam, Don met and eloped with a women named Lucille Valentini. They had two children and three grandchildren and celebrated their 40th anniversary together. Don had a caring heart and adored his family, friends, animals, hiking with his best friend Ed and his scenic, quite mountain life. He liked planting tomatoes, picking apples, pears, raspberries, blueberries, all from his homegrown trees and scrubs. He loved laughing to the Three Stoogies, watching western movies, the Philadelphia Phillies, and Penn State football. Don served in the Army for over 21 years. He ended his career with the rank of First Sergeant. His military career took him to Korea, Germany, California, Washington State, and Fort Dix. He was the first senior instructor of ROTC for Penn State Hazleton, Pa. After retiring from the army, he worked odd jobs and the United States Postal Service. Don passed away on August 14th, 2011 due to Lymphoma of the Central Nervous System caused by exposure to Agent Orange. He was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery. He is missed daily, but we know he is looking over all of us.
