Refreshing kind of combat leader

I was a captain commanding a 105 artillery battery which supported Col. Mark's "Iron Brigade" in Vietnam in early 1967. I fondly remember his visits to my battery position. We'd often sit together on sand bags and chat. Sure, we'd talk about important combat stuff, bit there was always time to talk about stuff personal. He'd tell me about his college wrestling days, and I'd share similar stuff with him. He even reflected that he was at end of his career because of his non traditional approach to so many things . So glad to see he earned two stars. I really admired and respected by that great soldier.

True American hero and leader

I had the honor of being Col. Marks door gunner from Sept. 1966 - June 1967. He truly cared for the men under his command. At Junction City we were the last unit to leave the LZ along the Cambodian border. After the last slicks lifted of with the brigade col marks observed that a orange marker had been left in the LZ. He wanted that marker. we turned back and flew back to the LZ. as we flew into the area the whole jungle opened up on us. The fire was about the worst I had ever seen . We touched down and Col marks jumped off the chopper and ran to the marker picked it up and ran ack to the chopper under heavy fire. He jumped on Longhorn 762 and we fought out way out of the LZ under heavy fire.
we made it out. Through out my serving as his door gunner he was a great leader who served his country with honor. After I left the army I tried to contact him just to thank him . He died in 1995. Thank you Col Marks for caring about your troops and being a great soldier .
