Newsletter - 2011: Year In Review

A Message From the President

Dear Friends,

Throughout 2011, your continued support has enabled VVMF to accomplish some important and truly remarkable goals.

As the year comes to an end, I would like to thank you for your careful attention, devotion, and hard work in remembering the veterans and fallen heroes who served and continue to serve our country.

On Monday, December 19, VVMF held its annual Christmas Tree Observance at The Wall in Washington, DC. As part of the ceremony, students from around the country gave thank you cards for soldiers past and present, and those cards were used to decorate the tree. I would like to thank all of you who helped make this year's ceremony a success.

As we look forward to 2012, VVMF wishes for your continued support as we look to construct the Education Center at The Wall, a place on the National Mall where our heroes' stories and sacrifices will never be forgotten.

Once again, thank you for all that you do to support VVMF and the memories of service-members both past and present.

2011 Build the Center Benefit Raises $415,000 for the Education Center at The Wall

On November 11, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund hosted the second annual Build the Center Benefit, supporting the construction of the Education Center at the Wall.

The Benefit raised over $415,000, more than $150,000 coming from donations received during the dinner alone.

The event, held at the Capital Hilton in downtown Washington, DC, was emceed by nationally-syndicated talk radio host Rusty Humphries and featured remarks by VVMF Founder and President Jan C. Scruggs, former Senator Chuck Hagel, Executive Producer of HISTORY’s Vietnam in HD Susan Werbe, David McIntyre, CEO of TriWest Healthcare Alliance, and VVMF National Spokesperson and contributor Tom Selleck.

Special guests Tom Selleck and David McIntyre, CEO of TriWest Health Care, look on as Rusty Humphries, emcee for the event, speaks about his father's service in Vietnam.

Senator Hagel was awarded the Charles “Mac” Mathias Award for his outstanding contributions to the United States as both a soldier and statesman.  Joseph Galloway, former Vietnam War correspondent for United Press International, was presented with the Legacy of Service Award for his exemplary dedication to the affairs of veterans and their families.

Lisa Lark, a Michigan volunteer who personally submitted a majority of photographs of service-members for the Education Center from her home state, was presented with the Hometown Heroes Award.

The Benefit was a major success for VVMF, and would not have been possible without generous contributions from our faithful supporters.

Veterans Day Match Program Exceeds Goals

All throughout October and November, VVMF and the TriWest Healthcare Alliance joined forces in raising support for the Education Center at the Wall with the Veterans Day Match Program.
The program matched contributions dollar-for-dollar, with the goal of raising and matching $1 Million by its culmination on Veterans Day.  VVMF is pleased to announce that this goal was met and exceeded, ultimately raising more than $2 Million dollars for the Education Center at the Wall.

This tremendous effort would not have been possible without the generous support of the TriWest Healthcare Alliance and its CEO David McIntyre, as well as the countless individuals who lent their assistance throughout the campaign.

However, the task is not yet complete.  VVMF is still seeking support from generous individuals to make sure the Education Center is constructed, ensuring our service-members’ stories and sacrifices are never forgotten.

National Call for Photos Boosted by A Record-Setting 2011

The National Call for Photos has had an extremely successful year.  With the combined efforts of volunteers, staff, and family and friends of the fallen, VVMF has been able to honor and preserve the memories of service-members who gave their lives in Vietnam.

This year, the National Call for Photos effort and the involvement of media outlets, the public, and dedicated volunteers has aided in the collection of more than 10,000 photos of military heroes -- boosting the total number of photographs received to over 24,000.

With these photos in hand, VVMF can ensure that the legacies, sacrifices, and honor of our fallen heroes will be on display for generations to come at The Education Center at The Wall.
