Col Cole, A Fine Honorable Man
Posted for: FRED VINCENT COLE:
I had the exraordinary honor of being able to talk at some length with LTC Cole on the night before he died. I was a SP-5, on permanent night duty CQ in the 20thEBC HQ. He was my commander, but over the course of our respective tours of duty he became my best friend in VN. I know this sounds strange in an era of FTA (veterans know what this means, and I agree), but I came to know him on a personal level.
I talked with him about every night for about 4 months, in his office, while the rest of the officers got drunk at the officer's club. This interaction was unbelivable.

I can't talk about it here, but he conveyed his sentiments about the war, his family and God.

Some month or so into my tour, without any suggestion or order whatsoever, I began cleaning his CAR-16 weapon, which he always left on his desk. He never failed to thank me, etiher in person or through somebody else. On the morning of his death, somebody retreived his weapon from the burnt wreckage of his Hughey, and put it on the center of his desk. One last time, I cleaned the weapon. This was a supreme honor. I don't know what became of the weapon.

It was an honor to know LTC Cole.
