We miss you, Don
Posted for: DONALD HERBERT WHITE:
Don -- I just knocked off a note to Mike Odom; I guess you and he are buds now, up there with Jesus and all those other good folks. Mike got nailed a month after you were killed in that gun pit. I heard you took an RPG! I wish I could have taken it for you. Despite the treachery of LBJ, MacNamara and all those "Great Society" henchmen, you did not die in vain, Don. We all fought, and some of us died for the American idea of freedom. Those politicians may have ruined our war, but they did not ruin our ideals. We were head and shoulders above them in courage and character. And, if you think LBJ and his crew were bad, you should see the gutless wonder we have for a President now! My guess is, you'll never meet him where you are, Don; he'll be shoveling coal somewhere else! I remember you, Mary Ann and the kids coming over to our apartment in Lawton, Christmas of 1967, singing carols. Mary Ann remarried a nice guy; I think you would have liked him, and, of course, you have watched over her and the kids all these years. You know what I also remember about you so well? You and I sat next to each other in the Prefix-5 part of the Advanced Course. I helped you through the math part and all, but you were a lot smarter than you thought you were. God bless you, Don, and keep you in his heavenly presence. I miss you and I cry my eyes out when I think about you at Mass every Sunday and sometimes during the weekdays when the ever-present thoughts of the War drift through my days. Heidi sends you her love and prayers. I'll see you sooner than later! John Wagner, LTC(Ret), U.S. Army
