Untitled
Posted for: WILLIAM E ZIMMERMAN JR:
I was one of a bunch of guys who used to live with William E. Zimmerman,
Jr. of Frederick, Maryland. We lived in Ocean City, Maryland, where we
worked in a restaurant. Bill was one of the funniest guys I've ever met,
a truly amiable person. Although the storm of Vietnam had been gathering
since the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution in August of 1964, Bill's death sent a
shockwave through us all. His death made me think, very seriously, about
the real people who implement the foreign policies which are often crafted
by cowards such as Robert MacNamara in Washington, D.C. Nevertheless, I
went on to serve in the Army myself during the war. Bill's death was the
end of innocence. Suddenly, the world was not simply suntans and girls in
bikinis. Things were never the same in America. They changed forever --
and not for better. However, it is our duty, as survivors, to remember.
