Robert Nozewski was born in Detroit in 1949 to Bernard and Louise Nozewski. The family, which included his sisters Jeanne and Laura and his brother Ken lived on Reuter St. Bob went to St. Barbara’s Catholic School, Lowrey School and Fordson High School. They were a close family, and had cousins who lived next door. Bob attended Henry Ford Community College for a time, and while still at Fordson worked at the Rouge Plant as a replacement. He was a mild-mannered but motivated individual. Bob was drafter into the U.S. Army in 1968, and completed his Basic Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky and his advanced individual training at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Although members of his family were against the war, Bob felt a sense of obligation. He arrived in Vietnam in February of 1969, and was assigned to E Company, 5th Battalion, 46th Infantry, 198th Infantry Brigade-American Division. Despite the family’s misgivings about the war, they wrote letters and sent packages faithfully. His comrades in E Company remember him as one of the best soldiers in his platoon. Because of his aptitude, his commanding offices selected him to attend Americal Division’s Combat Recon School in Chu Lai. Shortly after completing this program and while waiting for graduation ceremonies, Robert and several other graduates were injured when a rocket exploded into a nearby building. Five of the soldiers, including Cpl. Robert Nozewski, were killed. He was 20 years old. For his actions in Vietnam, Robert was awarded the Purple Heart Medal. He is buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield, Michigan.
