My CO at Co K MarSptBn
Posted for: JAMES WESTLEY AYERS:
When I was going thru comm school at Pensacola Fla, early 1964, Capt Ayers was my CO. I was in the Enlisted Club and they had a section called Over 21 Club. Captain Ayers was there and it was crowded. I was there to get a bag of chips, being only 17 and way too young to drink. He called out and asked me what I wanted to drink. I said, Bud, sir, and he made an announcement that any man serving in his outfit was old enough for a beer, and he ordered it and paid for it. The entire bar fell silent. I have heard many stories like this about Captain Ayer's respect for his troops. He was legendary.
