Washington, D.C.— The White House announced today that President Barack Obama will be the keynote speaker at the Memorial Day ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The event is scheduled to begin at 1:30 PM on May 28th.
Memorial Day events across the nation honor the fallen of all the nation’s conflicts, but this year the Obama Administration will join with the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF), the National Park Service, and the Department of Defense to pay special homage to those of the Vietnam War, as the DoD officially launches its commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the war.

“We are honored to have President Obama take part in a ceremony at The Wall. His administration has been very helpful when we have asked for support with issues including the Education Center. Two other U.S. presidents have spoken. President Ronald Reagan in 1984 and President Bill Clinton in 1993,” said Jan C. Scruggs, president and founder of the VVMF.
Obama will join other government officials and veterans to lay wreaths at The Wall during the ceremony. This year’s 10 name additions and their families will also be honored on Memorial Day.
About VVMF and the Education Center at The Wall
The Education Center at The Wall is a place on our National Mall where our military heroes' stories and sacrifice will never be forgotten. With a groundbreaking planned for November 2012, The Education Center at The Wall is a multi-million dollar, state-of- the-art visitor’s center and learning facility to be built on the grounds of the Vietnam Veterans and the Lincoln Memorials. Visitors will better understand the profound impact the Vietnam War had their friends and family members, their home towns, and the Nation. The Education Center will feature the faces and stories of the 58,272 men and women on “The Wall,” honoring those who fell in Vietnam, those who fought and returned, as well as the friends and families of all who served.
Established in 1979, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is dedicated to preserving the legacy of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., promoting healing and educating about the impact of the Vietnam War.
