  • Item Summary:Typewritten poem entitled "SOLDIER" by author "George L. Skypeck." The poem is written from the first-person perspective of a soldier in combat, and speaks of the fear, loneliness, terror, and pain of an experience that most would deem best forgotten. The poem closes with the line, "At least someday I will be able to say that I was proud of what I was...a soldier." The artifact was left at The Wall (presumably by Mr. Skypeck [?]) in October 1986.

The artifact was left by an anonymous donor as part of a larger assemblage of bracelets (VIVE (9464 & 9466 - 9471)) affixed to a tree near the Vietnam Women's Memorial (VWM) between December 1993 - March 1994.

THE OBJECT CONSISTS OF A FLAT STRIP OF RECTANGULARLY SHAPED, GOLD COLORED, POLISHED METAL (LIKELY ALUMINUM [?]) WITH SQUARED ENDS, BENT INTO A ROUGHLY CIRCULAR SHAPE TO FUNCTION AS A BRACELET. AT THE PROPER RIGHT-HAND SIDE OF THE EXTERIOR, OBVERSE OBJECT SURFACE IS AN ENGRAVING REPRESENTING THE OFFICIAL U.S. AIR FORCE SEAL, IN-FILLED WITH BLACK COLORATION FOR LEGIBILITY. A SIMILAR ENGRAVING IS OBSERVED AT THE PROPER LEFT-HAND SIDE OF THE EXTERIOR, OBVERSE OBJECT SURFACE REPRESENTING THE VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL (VVM) ABOVE THE WALL LOCATION INFORMATION, "1W LINE 122", WHICH IS ENGRAVED IN BLOCK SCRIPT/ARABIC NUMERALS AND ALSO IN-FILLED FOR LEGIBILITY. A FINAL ENGRAVED, IN-FILLED INSCRIPTION IS CENTERED BETWEEN THE TWO (2) PREVIOUS ENGRAVINGS AT THE CENTER OF THE OBVERSE OBJECT SURFACE, IS DEDICATED TO U.S. AIR FORCE CAPTAIN (CAPT) AND NURSE MARY THERESE KLINKER, AND BEARS HER BRANCH OF SERVICE, RANK, HOMETOWN OF RECORD, AND BIRTH/CASUALTY DATES ENGRAVED IN BLOCK SCRIPT/ARABIC NUMERALS.     I have a pow/mia braclet with Cpt. Klinkers name on it and I would like to get it to one of her relation.

Items left at The Wall - The Virtual Collection

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial was dedicated on November 13, 1982. Shortly thereafter, visitors to the Memorial began leaving items in memoriam to those killed and missing service members listed on The Wall. These artifacts now collectively comprise the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Collection -- a museum collection of more than 400,000 items held in the public trust by the National Park Service. Today, this Collection is among the largest and most actively researched collections in the National Capital Region.

The Collection is jointly curated by National Mall and Memorial Parks and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF). The VVMF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that relies upon public donations to continue its work, and receives no federal funding.
