  • Item Summary:White linen fabric swatch bearing the handwritten inscription, "1079" at the obverse surface. The artifact was left at The Wall along with five (5) color photographic prints (VIVE (870, 880, 882, 884, & 885), a black & white photographic print (VIVE (881)), an artifact assemblage (VIVE (883)), a sealed, unopened letter (VIVE (949)), & a fishing tackle box (VIVE (965)) by an anonymous donor between June - July 1985.

  • Item Summary:Color photographic print. The photo is an 'in-country' image captured in Vietnam that depicts a young, shirtless African-American serviceman posed behind a low wall comprised of wooden crates and fortified with sandbags. A handwritten inscription at the reverse surface of the photo dated, "June 21, 1988", from, "Kenneth Calhoun" identifies the subject & context of the photo and reads, "This photo was taken at LZ Uplift 1970 - 173rd Airborne Brigade. / My name is Kenneth Calhoun, assigned to Co E 173rd. / The soldier in the photo was nicknamed Ace and was from Bronx, New York and was KIA / THIS IS MY 1ST VISIT TO THE WALL - THANKS". The artifact was left at The Wall by U.S. Army and Vietnam veteran Kenneth Calhoun on June 21, 1985.

The note is addressed, "DEAR MICHAEL", is signed, "LOVE, / Jeff", and reads, "HERE'S SOME BEER TO GO WITH THE FOOD AND THE SMOKES (SORRY, NO BA MUOI BA IS AVAILABLE IN RALEIGH). / BERNIE BIRENBAUM'S (3E52) GOT THE SMOKES AND EDDIE BLUMER'S (29E38) GOT REAL FOOD." The artifact assemblage was left at The Wall by a donor identified only as, "Jeff" on August 5, 1994.

Items left at The Wall - The Virtual Collection

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial was dedicated on November 13, 1982. Shortly thereafter, visitors to the Memorial began leaving items in memoriam to those killed and missing service members listed on The Wall. These artifacts now collectively comprise the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Collection -- a museum collection of more than 400,000 items held in the public trust by the National Park Service. Today, this Collection is among the largest and most actively researched collections in the National Capital Region.

The Collection is jointly curated by National Mall and Memorial Parks and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF). The VVMF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that relies upon public donations to continue its work, and receives no federal funding.
