Today I found your name on the Virtual Wall. I wrote a song in your memory, and call it, "So Long Song". I never got a chance to say good-bye to you Jack, and will always remember you for the wonderful person you were. I have kept a picture of us taken at Marble Mountain, 3rd Am Trac Battalion, Da Nang. We are standing in front of our hooch with Joe and J.P. Rhodes. I of course am in the background leaning on you. The picture is now the cover art to my CD. I know you would approve of my idea. I only wish you could hear this song, as it not only remembers you, but all the Viet Nam Veterans who made the ultimate sacrafice for their country. My name could easily be on the wall along with yours and the others, but some how I survived. For so many years I wanted to do something to help people to recognize and remember Vietnam Veterans in a positive image. To let people know that we all fought with honor and pride. It took me a long time to come up with the right words I wanted to say. I wrote "So Long Song", to help me heal and give me a chance to say good-bye to you. Some day I will come to Washington D.C. to see the Memorial and view your name. It has been 30 yrs. now but seems like yesterday. So Long my friend. Your buddy, Bill Nolte. |
