Dear Gary, I couldn't understand or reason why you had to die in a primative country half way around the earth in a war I could not understand...not then or now 50 years later. Please know that your home town had a big piece of heart that died too the same moment we lost you and the moment you lost your life for this country.. I hope you somehow know what a hero you are to all those who loved you, to your hometown, your country and to me, a kid who grew up never forgetting you or your sacrifice. Rest in peace to one of my true heros, Gary. Cynthia Waller

    Dear PFC Gary Byford,
Thank you for your service as an Infantryman with the 1st Cavalry. As we celebrate Labor Day, and enjoy our freedom, it is important for us all to acknowledge the sacrifices of those like you who answered our nation's call. Please watch over America, it stills needs your courage and faithfulness. Rest in peace with the angels.

    Dear Gary,
Tomorrow is the day to remember our fallen Heroes, like yourself & your army buddy, my cousin Joseph Scicutella. Your one letter to me is stored with those received from him, and it will always be cherished. Those who left heart felt words on this page have spoken truths & love.
    God bless you,
    Carole Vitale

Gary, I told you a few years ago that thing have really changed in our great country, I'll just say, the family personal values and morals have changed. The big thing now is, if you say any thing, like your opinion, you have to make sure what you say is political correct. Family traditions like Christmas you have to leave the word Christ out. They are hell bent on changing our Constitution. The very thing you and your friends gave your lives for. They want to change our flag, and even take "In God We Trust" off all our money.
Yes things have changed, but the love and honor we all have for you and all the Vietnam KIA's is still going strong. We respect you and some day we will meet up again. I love you brother and I always will!

The Wall of Faces

Brought to you by the organization that built The Wall, the Vietnam Veterans Virtual Memorial Wall is dedicated to honoring, remembering and sharing the legacies of all those who died in the Vietnam War. All of these photos will be showcased in The Education Center at The Wall on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. To learn more about the effort to collect these photos and ensure their faces will never be forgotten, visit
