  • Final Mission of CPL Francis I. Toops

    Posted on 11/27/16 - by wkillian@smjuhsd.org
At 1445 hours on September 16, 1965, two LVTP’s from B Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, were enroute to pick up the 3rd Platoon, Company B, for participation in an operation planned for the afternoon. Approximately 2.5 miles northeast of Nui Dat Son (Hill 55) in Quang Nam Province, RVN, the lead vehicle, LVTP-5 B-26, hit a land mine and caught fire. Three Marines were wounded in the blast, including LCPL Ellias Boullion, and one was killed. The dead Marine, PFC David D. Case, was trapped in the burning vehicle. The three wounded were evacuated to a bridge where they were picked up by helicopter and brought to a military hospital. Additional LVTP’s and personnel were dispatched from the bridge and returned to the burning vehicle to provide security. The Marines guarding the burning LVTP received what they thought was one mortar round, which injured four men, including LCPL Donald J. Tanner and CPL Francis I. Toops. A woman spotted near the disable LVTP was apprehended immediately following the last explosion. She was evacuated and interviewed by the village chief. She said that the second explosion was also a mine and not a mortar round. LCPL Boullion died of his wounds on September 29th. CPL Toops also died of his wounds, on October 8th, and LCPL Tanner died December 4th. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]

Dear CPL Francis Ivan Toops, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

    Curt Carter
