Robert Ray Boyd was my cousin . I always called him Bobby Ray. He was 6 years older than I and I always looked up to him. He was the big brother I never had. We had faith and family in common and I even majored in chemistry in college like he did. We wrote each other while he was in Vietnam. We talked about what we were learning about life now that we had left home, the values we were claiming as our own. His death was a tragic loss but he loved the people of Vietnam and gave his all trying to serve them. He is my hero.

    DEAR CAPTAIN ROBERT BOYD,
THANKS FOR YOUR SERVICE AS AN AIRBORNE QUALIFIED FIELD ARTILLERY UNIT COMMANDER. ARTILLERYMEN ARE SPECIAL TO ME. MEMORIAL DAY IS APPROACHING, BUT ON ALL DAYS WE SHOULD HONOR YOU. IT HAS BEEN FAR TOO LONG FOR ALL OF YOU TO HAVE BEEN GONE. WE APPRECIATE ALL YOU HAVE DONE, AND YOUR SACRIFICE. WATCH OVER THE U.S.A., IT STILL NEEDS YOUR COURAGE. GOD BLESS YOU. MAY THE ANGELS BE AT YOUR SIDE. REST IN PEACE. YOU ARE ALL IN OUR PRAYERS.

  • Remembering An American Hero

Dear Captain Robert Ray Boyd, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

    With respect, Sir

    Curt Carter
