SGT Ronald D. Rowsey was trained as an anti-tank assaultman serving with the 106mm Recoilless Rifle Platoon, Headquarters and Service (H&S) Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines. On January 12, 1971, the Flame Section of the 106 Platoon were at the 504th Military Police Battalion burning grass around their wire. CPL Sapp became engulfed in a ball of fire. Seeing this, and without regard for himself, SGT Rowsey immediately ran to CPL Sapp and pulled him out of the way, becoming engulfed in the ball of fire himself. This resulted in 99% of his body receiving 2nd and 3rd degree burns. Both marines were medivacked and received medical treatment. SGT Rowsey, however, succumbed to his injuries on January 18, 1971. A memorial service was held for him on Hill 34 LZ on January 22, 1971. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
