  • Final Mission of SFC John H. Robertson

    Posted on 10/19/15 - by wkillian@smjuhsd.org
SFC John H. Robertson was assigned to Command & Control North (CCN), MACV-SOG. There are two accounts of his loss on May 20, 1968. First account – SFC Robertson was a passenger and the only American onboard a Vietnamese CH-34 helicopter on a medevac mission four miles inside Laos south of the A Shau Valley. (Note: some records indicate this was a resupply mission to a Special Forces recon force which was in heavy enemy contact.) As the aircraft was landing, it was hit by enemy fire, smashed into the trees, and burst into flames, breaking up as it hit the ground. Several helicopters made low passes over the crash site, but no sign of survivors was observed. Enemy activity in the area prevented Vietnamese ground units from reaching the wreckage. [Taken from pownetwork.org] Second account - I was on the Hatchet Force (HF) re-supply mission on May 20, 1968that took the lives of SFC Robertson and the three H-34 Kingbee crew-members. I was in the Black Angel 15 Gunship (101st Abn). We were escorting 3 Kingbees launched out of FOB-1 to a mountainside in Laos just west of the A Shau (Valley) where the HF was located. The area had been very quiet and there had not been recent enemy contact so the re-supply was expected to be somewhat uneventful. We took our SOP low & slow pass at the LZ and everything was quiet so we picked up the lead Kingbee and started our approach to the LZ. As we escorted (from the rear right), the first Kingbee (with SFC Robertson on board) was on approach to the LZ at treetop level when a 12.7mm opened up on it and it also took a single direct hit from an RPG. The Kingbee burst into flames and a moment later it exploded before hitting the ground. The immediate report from the ground was that there were no survivors. Due to the severity of the air explosion we knew before being told that there could be no survivors. I have this event recorded in my notes entered on May 20, 1968. • Remembering An American Hero

Dear MSGT John Hartley Robertson, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

    With respect, Sir

    Curt Carter

  • I been with the man

I am the one who has caused so much problems in all this. it has not been my heart. i am a Vietnam veteran of two years in the war. Also someone on this post has posted a picture saying they found a photo of John Hartley Robertson, Sorry that is not him, that is me. I found this man in Vietnam who has second language syndrome and dementia. He claims to be an American and thinks he may be John Hartley Robertson, and some of his family do too. However this I know all the negative stuff saying he is not a vet does not add up. No one not one has provided and iron clad proof that his man is not a Veteran. They make accusation that just do not stand. We had an Isotope test on him and it states he is from the USA, and he also is circumcised which no Vietnamese and only 2% of French and at his age back than probably 0% percent. I cannot just quit on this guy just because they tell me too, or as they say somebody said he is not. I asked the US embassy in Cambodia a man name Loratan, (at least close to that), to test him to prove he is or is not a Vet. He told me they did not want to waste tax payers dollars. That embassy is a beautiful compound worth millions of dollars, and I told him we will spend 20 million on a bomber to blow people up, but cannot spend a few thousand to find the truth. I also told him that is a insult to every American Vet that has put their life on the line. They also told me if i kept pursuing this I would lose my integrity. I tell you this. I am a Vietnam Veteran and i have leaned much now about the cover up on MIAs and POWs and it is shocking. So I am not going to leave someone behind just because someone says to. Please prove it with iron Clad proof he is not an American, the proof we have says he is. Yes he may not be John Hartley Robertson but He is and American Soldier this I believe, and I been taught as a soldier we do not leave our Brothers behind. I only wish Vets would truly stand up with he flag they wave and the T Shirts we wear in regards to MIAs. I know I been made to look like a misguided fool, but a fool I will be than quit on a life. he is a person not a piece of meat we toss away, as we have done with so many others of those forgotten
