  • Too Young

They tried to tell them they were too young. That life together would be rough with John leaving for Vietnam. Though the honeymoon was short lived, their love lasted a lifetime. Cherrie never forgot John for she kept his last name all of her days. She would also visit John’s gravesite each year and have a memorial by his name on the traveling wall.

In September of 2005 cancer took her and she was once again reunited with her high school sweetheart. Only ten days they had together, but now they’ll have an eternity together.

Nat King Cole’s song Too Young says it best.

“And yes we’re not too young to know. This love will last, though years may go. And then someday, they may recall. We were not too young at all.”

Come next spring when the snow is finally gone, I will visit Cherrie’s site and place flowers there for her from John.

    May they stay forever young.

The Wall of Faces

Brought to you by the organization that built The Wall, the Vietnam Veterans Virtual Memorial Wall is dedicated to honoring, remembering and sharing the legacies of all those who died in the Vietnam War. Here you can go beyond the names on The Wall to see the faces, share the stories and read the remembrances posted by friends, neighbors, classmates and family members.

All of these photos will be showcased in The Education Center at The Wall on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. To learn more about the effort to collect these photos and ensure their faces will never be forgotten, visit www.buildthecenter.org.
