Joel was a friend of mine. We were both Dog Handlers stationed at Phan Rang Air Base in Viet Nam. I remember Joel dying while writing a letter to his wife. He was hit by a mortar round. He enjoyed photography and took several photo's of me and my dog Rinda. Rest in Peace Joel.

A1C Joel C. Loftis was a security policeman and K9 dog handler serving with the 35th Security Police Squadron at Phan Rang Air Base, Ninh Thuan Province, RVN. SSGT Walter J. Dart Jr., like A1C Loftis, also served at Phan Rang with the 35th Combat Support Group, 35th Tactical Fighter Wing, 7th Air Force. On June 7, 1969, the base was attacked with 107 mm rockets. According to a witness, A1C Loftis was sitting in front of the mailroom reading his mail when a rocket landed nearby, fatally injuring him. SSGT Dart was also killed by a rocket which landed in the vicinity of the mail room. [Taken from,, and]
  • Remembering An American Hero

Dear A1C Joel Conrad Loftis, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

    With respect, Sir

    Curt Carter
