Online Telecast Begins at 10:00 AM and Ceremony Begins at 1:00 PM on Friday, November 11
Washington, D.C. – The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) and the National Park Service expect thousands to gather at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial for the annual Veterans Day Observance at The Wall. The ceremony will begin at 1:00pm on Friday, November 11, 2011.
“Each Veterans Day, we honor all who served – those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and those who came home from war to build a life and contribute to the growth and prosperity of our country,” said Jan C. Scruggs, Founder and President of the VVMF. “The Vietnam Veterans Memorial was built to honor all who served in Vietnam. It is fitting that we pause here on this special day of tribute to honor those who have served in all of America’s wars.”
The keynote speaker for the Veterans Day ceremony will be Joseph L. Galloway – an award-winning and nationally-respected correspondent and journalist during the Vietnam War. Galloway is one of America’s premier news correspondents, covering foreign affairs for nearly 50 years. A native of Refugio, Texas, Galloway spent 22 years as a foreign affairs correspondent and Bureau Chief for United Press International before moving on to become Senior Editor of U.S. News and World Report magazine. He retired in 2006 as Senior Military Correspondent of Knight-Ridder Newspapers but continued to write his weekly syndicated column on military and national security affairs until 2010.
Mr. Galloway is the co-author of the best-selling book We Were Soldiers Once – and Young, with retired general Hal G. Moore, a story that was the basis for the critically-acclaimed film “We Were Soldiers,” starring Mel Gibson. He has also co-authored two other books: Triumph Without Victory: The History of the Persian Gulf War, and We Are Soldiers Still: A Journey Back to the Battlefields of Vietnam.
On May 1, 1998, Galloway was decorated with the Bronze Star for Valor, for rescuing soldiers under fire in Ia Drang Valley, Vietnam, in November, 1965. His is the only Medal of Valor in Combat awarded to a civilian by the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
Additional remarks will be provided by Dr. Libby O’Connell, Senior Vice President of Corporate Outreach and Chief Historian for the HISTORY Channel. HISTORY is set to premiere Vietnam in HD on November 8th, 9th and 10th. This epic six-hour television event will immerse viewers in the sights, the sounds and stories of the Vietnam War in a way that has not been done before. The series features rare and never-seen film, much of it shot by soldiers in action. Thousands of hours of uncensored footage, detailing every critical chapter of the Vietnam War, were located, restored and then transferred to High Definition. The dynamic footage combined with powerful storytelling from 13 gripping first person accounts will provide the viewer with a powerful perspective on this conflict.
Singing our National Anthem will be Braiden Sunshine and the Navy Color Guard will retire the colors.
In conjunction with these events, VVMF and TV Worldwide will host a twelve-hour Telethon benefitting the Education Center at the Wall, featuring a live webcast of the Veterans Day ceremony available at 1:00pm.
