I learned so much from Johnnie and even though he went home to his eternal reward on June 10, 1966, he has always been with me in memory and influence; on that day he transferred to a higher place to observe. He has joined the "the great cloud of witnesses (Hebrews 12:1)," looking down on his family and friends waiting for that great day when we will be together again. I am a better person today because of the influence that Johnnie P. Sawyer had on my life. “I will remember Jackie Clyde Dehart. The Freedom Rock and the Mohawk August 29, 1969 brought a stormy, rainy night to the area around Vung Tau, South Vietnam. I was sitting in my hootch, preparing for my 11:00 PM mission. About 9:30, someone ran in telling me I had to report to the flight-line for immediate take off. I was told that Jackie Dehart's plane had gone down and I was to be part of the initial search party. That night started me on a mission I have yet to complete. Jackie was a dear friend of mine. He has been missed, but not forgotten for all of these 40 plus years. I have done a number of things over the years to do my part in keeping Jackie's memory alive. In October of 1989, I made my first of what has now become five trips to Washington, D.C., to The Wall . On two of those visits, Jackie's sister Mona, and her husband Bob, made the trip. Our group include Ron Wheeler and Gene Walker. Along with Jackie, the four of us were very close. We were also accompanied by Jack Beetle Bailey, one of our pilots from the 73rd Surveillance Airplane Company. My wife Roxie and our son Tony were included. I had managed to track down Jackie's family in 1997. At our annual OV-1 Mohawk Association Reunion, Ron, Gene and I had the family as our guests at the banquet on Saturday night. The reunion was at the Chamberlain Hotel at Fort Monroe, outside of Hampton, VA. That is where Jackie's family lives. I thought I had done all I could do to complete my mission . Then I heard about The Freedom Rock and the magnificent work being done each year by Ray Bubba Sorensen. It took me a couple of years, I didn't want to appear pushy, to complete this step in my mission . Jackie Dehart will be memorialized on The Freedom Rock this Memorial Day, May 30, 2011. As part of this event, a banquet is being held at the Airport Holiday Inn, in Des Moines on Sunday May 29th. On Monday, The American Legion Riders will escort our bus of fellow Mohawkers and family, from the Holiday Inn, to The Freedom Rock . Part of the program will include a Fly Over by an OV-1 Mohawk. After we are finished there, we will continue on to the Greenfield Airport where the OV-1 Mohawk will be landing. We will be taking a tour of the Iowa Aviation Museum, the on to the airport for burgers grilled by the Cattleman's Association. We will then board the bus and head over to the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, on our way back to Des Moines. If the weather cooperates with us, we expect up to 500 to be attending. The majority of those in this group will be The American Legion Riders. I am so grateful to them for their participation. Any profits from the weekend will be donate to the Legion Riders Legacy Scholarship program. This helps to provide scholarships to the children of our fallen troops. Please come out and enjoy Memorial Day with us. Ed Cycle Bear Rohner 73rd SAC Vung Tau, South Vietnam 10 January 1969 10 January 1970” - Ed from Lake View, IA

I have heard from many of his friends through the years. No one has forgotten him; and for that I am forever grateful. September 7, 1967 was the saddest day of my life. We had such great times together. Mom and Dad would get so mad when he made me laugh at the dinner table. He would make faces at me when Mom and Dad weren't looking! We just cracked up and couldn't stop. I was usually the one who was punished. That is okay as Donnie had such a short time to live. I miss him each and every day. I just learned from my ex-husband who flew Chinook rescue flights in Nam the he had tried to get Paul transferred to his unit to be a gunner on his helicopter. The commanding office refused and Bill believes that Paul would have made it home safe and sound if the transfer had gone through.
