Locating a Name

When You Visit The Memorial
To locate a name on the Memorial, please have some of the following information with you, not all is required: First name, last name, branch of service, rank, date of birth, date of casualty, state or city where they enlisted. Bring this information to the kiosk located at the entrance to the Memorial and a National Park Service ranger or volunteer will assist you.

Using a Directory
There are several copies of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Directory of Names located at the east and west ends of the Memorial. You will want the same information as listed above in order to locate a name.

The directory can be purchased at the Lincoln Memorial Gift Shop on the National Mall or by calling Guest Services Inc. at (202) 223-6706.

Locating a Name Online
As part of its effort to preserve the legacy of The Wall and to educate about the impact of the Vietnam War era on society, VVMF, in partnership with Winstar Communications, Inc., developed an interactive website to serve as the Memorial's virtual twin.

The Virtual Wall allows visitors to take a virtual visit to The Wall and leave remembrances of loved ones and family members who died in the Vietnam War. The website was launched on Nov. 10, 1998 at the White House by Vice President Al Gore, a Vietnam veteran.

Name Rubbings
Thousands of Americans receive free name rubbings from VVMF each year. Every week, volunteers bring paper and pencil to The Wall to continue th e work that keeps alive the memory of an American hero who gave his or her life decades ago.

To receive a free name rubbing, please contact VVMF at (202) 393-0090 or via e-mail at vvmf@vvmf.org.
