The Vietnam Veterans Memorial stands as a symbol of America's honor and recognition of the individuals who served and sacrificed their lives in the Vietnam War. Inscribed on the black granite panels are the names of more than 58,000 who gave their lives or remain missing.
Controversial at its creation, The Wall now stands as an iconic presence on the National Mall. Millions visit each year to read the names, leave items in tribute and remember the sacrifices made during one of America’s longest and most divisive wars.
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial shaped how people think of memorials. It has stirred probing questions and reflection about history, American culture and the cost of war. Equally as important, it continues to influence how we as a nation remember, honor and mourn.
Below, you will find links to a wealth of information to provide historical background for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial: who was involved in its creation; how it came to be; why it was controversial; and what it means to family, friends and those who served in Vietnam.
