FORMER VVMF CHAIRMAN JOHN P. "JACK" WHEELER LAID TO REST TODAY AT ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY
VVMF President Jan Scruggs Remembers His Former Colleague
A funeral service with full military honors is being held this morning at Arlington National Cemetery for John P. "Jack" Wheeler III, who died late last year. Wheeler is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and is a veteran of the Vietnam War. Interment will be at the Arlington National Cemetery Columbarium. VVMF President Jan Scruggs, who worked with Wheeler to create the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, shares his thoughts:
"Today, our former colleague and a fellow Vietnam veteran Jack Wheeler is being laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery. He served his country honorably, both during the Vietnam War and later, as he helped create the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to honor all who served in that long and divisive war.
"Jack Wheeler was a tireless worker who brought passion and dedication to reaching his goals. He lived his life with the commitment to duty, honor and country that he learned at West Point. As the first chairman of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, he was instrumental in helping the organization achieve its early goals and later mission.
"Today, we honor Jack Wheeler and his many accomplishments. Rest in peace."
