VVMF’S VIRTUAL WALL HELPS PEOPLE REMEMBER AND RECONNECT

Morris Mallard Jr. served with the Army's 36th Engineer Battalion in Phouc Tuy Province, South Vietnam, and was killed on August 7, 1968, when a bomb was detonanted under a small bridge as his vehicle passed over it.

Several men who knew and served with him have posted their remembrances on Mallard's Virtual Wall page over the years. Last month, his daughter Marsha L. Roach wrote to VVMF and asked to be put in contact with the veterans who had posted remembrances. Several of them wrote to her with fond remembrances of her father. "Your Dad had a great time with the Aussies!" wrote Jim Burke.

Another friend wrote of the Fosters Beer that Mallard was able to procure for the troops, along with popular movies. "Your Dad and others like him will never be forgotten by us," wrote Mike Beebe.

The Australian references were especially appropriate for Marsha, who lives in Australia. "I really want to say THANK YOU so very much for the e-mails that you sent me," she wrote. "They had to be the most heartfelt and emotional e-mails that I have ever gotten."

John L. Molyneaux Jr. is the only native-born Australian whose name is on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Molyneaux served as a first lieutenant with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and was killed on Aug. 31, 1968 in Quang Nam Province, Vietnam. He is remembered on Panel 45W, Row 15 of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

VVMF's Virtual Wall is an active community of remembrance for friends and family of those who died or remain missing during the Vietnam War, as well as ordinary citizens wishing to express their gratitude to service members they never met. VVMF is gathering photos and stories for each of the 58,267 individuals whose names are on The Wall. Currently, around 17,000 photos have been collected, with more than 1,500 collected in February alone.
