THREE SERVICEMEN STATUE
RESTORATION AND PRESERVATION
PROJECT
Spring/Summer 2010
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) and the National Park Service (NPS) are working together to carefully restore the Three Servicemen Statue. The worn bronze finish and original color palette will be restored during the next several weeks.
During this time, the Three Servicemen Statue Plaza is open and the Statue is visible through 3 full-length windows.
Following the conclusion of this approximately six-week restoration project, VVMF and NPS will continue to work together to preserve the Three Servicemen Statue, so that it may stand here in honor of the service and sacrifice of our nation's Vietnam veterans for generations to come.
Below is a brief overview of the steps that will be taken, beginning May 25, to accomplish this important project.
- Erect restoration shelter that will completely enclose the Statue; there are windows to allow the visitor to watch the work in progress
- Hand wipe the Statue to clean and remove dirt and old wax
- Pressure treat the Statue with non-abrasive materials to remove damaged patina and bring the Statue back to the bare bronze
- Spot clean the Statue to remove residual wax and patina
- Hand rub metal surfaces to prepare for patina application with copper wool and Scotch Brite pads
- Apply eight different colors of multi-layered chemically applied patina using hand brushing and heat
- Apply three coats of wax once the patina is fully developed
- Remove restoration shelter and restore planting bed
Keep checking back to the VVMF website for photos and updates to the restoration project. (View photos)
