The Vietnam Veterans Memorial stands as a symbol of America's honor and recognition of the men and women who served and sacrificed their lives in the Vietnam War. Inscribed on the black granite wall are the names of more than 58,000 who gave their lives or remain missing. Yet the Memorial itself is dedicated to honor the "courage, sacrifice, and devotion to duty and country" of all who answered the call to serve during the longest war in U.S. history.

For nearly three decades, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial – known today simply as The Wall – has inspired us as a nation. Since its dedication on November 13, 1982, The Wall has stirred probing questions and reflection about history, American culture and the cost of war. Equally as important, The Wall continues to influence greatly how we as a nation remember, honor and mourn.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund – the non-profit organization responsible for building the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. – marked the Memorial's 25th Anniversary in 2007 with a series of commemorative and educational events held throughout the year, culminating in November with the Reading of the Names and a special Veterans Day observance at The Wall.
